MISSING IN ACTION: The Eels will once again be without star full-back Jarryd Hayne (foot), but he is expected to return next week. Rookie Jake Maloney returns at full-back from the flu, ousting Cheyse Blair from the side altogether. Former Storm player Luke Kelly picked up a cheekbone injury which could keep him out for the remainder of the season. His place has been taken by the skilful Joseph Paulo, whose back-row spot will be filled by the returning Ben Smith (suspension). Big Fuifui Moimoi (concussions) has been cleared to play despite being knocked senseless last week.
Still no Billy Slater for the Storm after it was revealed the knee injury he suffered in Origin II is taking longer to heal than first envisaged. Coach Craig Bellamy does not want to take any risks with his star custodian. Winger Matt Duffie is out for at least a month with a shoulder injury suffered last week, but his place in the side has been taken by Dane Nielsen who returns in the centres after missing last week with a bicep injury.
FORM: Following three successive losses, the Storm have been joined on 28 points by the Bulldogs, but they retain top spot due to a superior for-and-against. Last weekend’s loss to the Cowboys was a vast improvement on the Storm’s previous effort against the Raiders but they struggled to control Johnathan Thurston which is a task they performed far more effectively earlier in the season when the club was on fire. Those points Melbourne banked earlier in the year are certainly coming in handy now.
It was refreshing to see the Eels actually have a dig when it counted against the Bulldogs last Friday despite going down by 20 points in the final wash-up. Too often this year they have started appallingly, only to fight back when the result was as good as gone, but there were periods of this game where they actually dominated their more successful rivals. The motivation of avoiding the wooden spoon and providing retiring stalwarts Luke Burt and Nathan Hindmarsh with a memorable send-off to their careers will hopefully ensure this struggling club competes over the final six rounds of the comp.
