MISSING IN ACTION:
It's been a smooth run through the finals for the Bulldogs with coach Des Hasler naming an unchanged line-up for a third straight week. Back-rower Dene Halatau has been named on a five-man bench but unless there are any late mishaps he will be the unlucky one that misses out on a grand final berth.
There's a bit more uncertainty surrounding the make-up of the Melbourne side with Craig Bellamy selecting an extended 21-man squad. Winger Sisa Waqa has been named despite battling a knee injury which forced him to pull out of the win over Manly last weekend. Storm officials are confident he'll play but if not either Anthony Quinn or Mahe Fonua will come into the team. There were reports centre Will Chambers tweaked a hamstring in training this week but he will play as long as he gets through training on Thursday. Utility Ryan Hinchcliffe and forwards Kevin Proctor, Jaiman Lowe and Richie Fa'aoso are likely to win the four bench spots.

FORM:Not surprisingly both sides come into the biggest match of the year in brilliant form. The Canterbury juggernaut has been rolling for almost four months, with last week's 32-8 preliminary final win over South Sydney their 15th victory in the last 16 games. Meanwhile Melbourne's five-game losing streak midway through the season is all forgotten after seven wins on the trot. The Storm's form in the finals has been more impressive than the Bulldogs although they did appear to get the Rabbitohs and Sea Eagles on off days. The two sides have met twice this season - splitting it one apiece - and their head-to-head record is just as tight with the Dogs edging it 15-14. History is on Canterbury's side with the minor premiers winning 16 of the 25 times the top-two ranked teams have played in the decider, although Melbourne have won all three clashes between the two clubs at ANZ Stadium. If the Bulldogs win Hasler will become the first coach in rugby league's 104-year history to win back-to-back premierships at different clubs.

Sunday's NRL grand final between minor premiers Canterbury and Melbourne has all the ingredients to be a thriller.

The ANZ Stadium showdown has Bulldogs coach Hasler locking horns with Storm mentor Bellamy in a premiership decider for the third time in six years.

The first occasion was in 2007 when Bellamy's side prevailed 34-8 against Hasler's Manly, only for the Sea Eagles to turn the tables 12 months later with a record-breaking 40-0 triumph.

The gruff Hasler has added lustre to his reputation as one the finest coaches in the game by revolutionising a Bulldogs team that comfortably missed the finals last year in his first season there.

Like Bellamy, Hasler has shown a remarkable facility for bringing the best out of players previously considered flawed or journeymen and to mould a team totally committed to his style.

And victory against the Storm on Sunday would see him become the first man to win successive premierships with two different clubs.

Bellamy is full of admiration for the way Hasler has transformed the Bulldogs and the former NSW coach is expecting nothing different from the minor premiers on Sunday.

"They've been the best team and the most consistent team throughout the competition," Bellamy says.

"He's done a wonderful job in getting all of the guys on board and believing in what he wants them to do."

The Storm go into the game denying they are seeking redemption after being stripped of the premierships they won in 2007 and 2009 for cheating the salary cap but there's no doubt there's an element of that in the Melbourne air.

Just seven players remain from the side that beat Parramatta to win the 2009 decider.

But bolstered by the ever-present Big Three of Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk, Bellamy has built a formidable side made up of journeymen forwards and some exciting youngsters.

The likes of Bryan Norrie, Jaiman Lowe and Todd Lowrie have been given new leases of life by Bellamy after being released by Cronulla, South Sydney and Parramatta.

Norrie was set to return to his life as an electrician before Bellamy picked up the phone and invited him down to Melbourne.

"I have to admit I was shocked," Norrie says.

"I'd had lots of injuries at Cronulla, lost my confidence, and was all set to go back on the tools.

"Craig is brilliant at identifying a role that suits the strengths of certain players and gives us a simple gameplan and we follow it.

"There's no big secret. But he is the best coach I have ever played under and there is a feeling amongst all the players that we'd love to give him a premiership."

MISSING IN ACTION:Canterbury coach Des Hasler has had the luxury of naming an unchanged squad to the one that took care of Manly in the qualifying final a fortnight ago. With the benefit of a week’s rest, the Bulldogs players will have been able to treat any niggling problems and should be well rested.
The Rabbitohs welcome back winger Nathan Merritt after the veteran flyer missed last weekend’s win over Canberra with a shoulder injury. Merritt will play in his 200th NRL game. His inclusion means Justin Hunt drops back to an extended bench alongside Jason Clark (ankle), who is also eligible again after injury.
FORM:The Bulldogs had their feet up last weekend and would have needed the break after a bruising win over the Sea Eagles in the first week of the finals. Not only have Canterbury won 14 of their last 15 matches, they also boast 11 wins from their last 14 at ANZ and have come out on top in six of their last eight clashes against South Sydney.
Michael Maguire’s troops kept their season alive – and emphatically shot down any suggestions of semi-final stage fright – with their 38-16 dismantling of the Raiders last Saturday night. It was typical South Sydney. Blow their opponents away with a devastating spell, clock off and allow them back into the game, before regrouping, finding a second wind and racking up a big score. It’s great when it’s enough to win but a repeat won’t be good enough against the Bulldogs.

MISSING IN ACTION: South Sydney have lost centre Matt King for the rest of the season after he suffered a broken arm in the loss to Melbourne last weekend. Andrew Everingham shifts from the wing to centre while Justin Hunt has been promoted to the flank. Shaune Corrigan comes into a 20-man squad which coach Michael Maguire will trim before kick-off. Kiwi international hooker Issac Luke has again been selected to start off the bench. Winger Nathan Merritt, who is expected to shake off a shoulder problem to play, and co-captain Michael Crocker will play their 200th games in the NRL.
The Raiders have also lost a key centre, with Jarrod Croker suffering a fractured cheekbone in their elimination final win over Cronulla last Sunday. The versatile Joel Thompson will move from the back-row to the back-line, with Joe Picker coming into the starting line-up. Rookie Jack Wighton, who was thought to have been out for the season with a toe injury from a freak trampoline accident a few months ago, is back in the side on a seven-man bench. Starting props David Shillington and Dane Tilse will both play in their 150th games. Coach David Furner still needs to decide who will fill Croker’s goal-kicking boots, with Josh Dugan, Blake Ferguson and Sam Williams all contenders.

 

FORM:The Rabbitohs entered the finals series full of hope at ending their 41-year premiership drought but were given a rude wake-up call by a firing Melbourne outfit. Souths never recovered from an ill-disciplined start to the match, trailing 18-0 at the break before improving in the second half to lose 24-6. There are suggestions the Rabbitohs players froze under the pressure of just the club’s second finals appearance in 23 years, something they’ve been very vocal in denying. Bow out in straight sets and there can be no question of that.

There’s arguably no hotter side left in the competition now than the Raiders, who made it six wins on the trot with their 34-16 win over the Sharks last weekend. Despite some nervy moments in the second half, the free-scoring Green Machine raced in four tries in the last 13 minutes to blow Cronulla away and have their fans believing their giant-killing run is far from ending. The loss of Croker is a blow but arguably stiffens them up further defensively. The Raiders have won three from their last five at ANZ Stadium but were beaten at the venue by the Rabbitohs earlier this season.

This is a much bigger test, especially given the Cowboys’ appalling form in the Harbour City. Turn away now if you support Neil Henry’s men because it makes for ugly reading: North Queensland have played 112 games in Sydney for 33 wins (success rate 29 percent). They have won just four of their past 25 matches since 2008 and only one of their past 10 in the NSW capital. Records are meant to be broken but that one needs a sledgehammer to crack it open. Manly’s six-match winning run came to an end last week at the hands of Canterbury. It was enough for many critics to write them off but not this one. There were only six points in it and if Matai hadn’t super glued the ball to his hands, the Sea Eagles may have scored a late try to lock it all up. MISSING IN ACTION: There’s a couple of injury concerns for Canberra with Josh Dugan (ankle) and Sam Williams (shoulder) racing the clock to prove their fitness. Travis Waddell and Dimitri Pelo have been named on an extended bench and will come into the side should there be a late withdrawal.
Cronulla will be without centre Ben Pomeroy after he fell victim to the ARLC’s shoulder charge crackdown at the judiciary on Wednesday night. FORM: The Raiders have surged into the finals on the back of five straights wins, including last weekend’s come-from-behind thrashing of the Warriors. Their recent success has been built on the back of their attack, averaging almost 30 points a game during that run. The Raiders have met the Sharks four times in the finals, winning on just one occasion.
In contrast, the Sharks have limped into the finals with just two wins in their past nine games. They squandered the chance to secure a home final by losing 36-22 to North Queensland last weekend. The two sides have played twice this year, with one win apiece and both times it was the away side that have come out on top.

FORM: The Cowboys are hitting top gear at just the right time, with last weekend’s 36-22 win over Cronulla their fourth in a row. Most significantly for Neil Henry’s side it was the first time this season they have won in Sydney, which they need to make a habit of if they are to be contenders for the premiership.

The Broncos only just scraped into the top eight thanks to their hard-fought win over Penrith last Friday night. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak. Brisbane enjoys a wonderful record against the Cowboys, winning 24 of 33 previous clashes, including 14 from 17 at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

The Dragons edge the head-to-head meetings (12-11) and won the previous meeting this season 14-12.

With skipper Robbie Farah (broken hand) already unavailable, the Tigers have now lost back-up hooker Liam Fulton to a wrist injury. Masada Iosefa takes on the hooking role this week with Tom Humble onto the bench. There’s also a reshuffle in the backline with Chris Lawrence moving to five-eighth, Beau Ryan into the centres and Tim Moltzen returns to fullback.
No such worries for Melbourne with only Justin O’Neill, who was a late scratching on Monday night, returning to the team in place of the departing Dane Nielsen. There is some speculation though that Craig Bellamy may opt to rest a few players, including Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk, with the Storm assured of a top-two finish and home final in week one of the playoffs.

 

FORM:The Tigers have seen their finals hopes take a huge battering over the past fortnight, with their heart-breaking golden-point loss to Canterbury followed up with their inept display in the 44-20 thrashing at the hands of the Roosters. It means they are relying on other results this weekend to sneak into the top eight. Not only do the Tigers need to beat Melbourne, they must hope either Brisbane or Canberra lose, and still need to make up 14 points on the Raiders to pass them on for and against.

Monday night’s last-gasp win over Cronulla was the Storm’s fourth victory in a row and gives them an outside chance of finishing with the minor premiership if the Roosters can upset Canterbury. But Bellamy would not have been happy with his side’s showing against the Sharks, with his side guilty of making a host of sloppy errors throughout the 80 minutes. He will want that eradicated heading into the finals. The Tigers may be outsiders but have a great record at Leichhardt, winning 10 of their past 12 matches at the venue.

FORM:The Titans’ finals hopes were virtually extinguished in Penrith last Saturday afternoon when they surrendered meekly to the mountain men. After such an admirable fight back over the second half of the season, it wasn’t the way the Gold Coast deserved to go out, but at least they finished well clear of the wooden spoon – a fate they suffered in 2011.

A pattern appears to be emerging with Manly matches where they start like a house on fire and fall away in the second half. It occurred again last Friday against the Broncos night, racking up 16-0 lead after 28 minutes then failing to score a point for the remainder of the game. It was still a dominating display by a team that has won its past five games, but these late-game switch-offs would want to cease come the finals.

MISSING IN ACTION:Brisbane’s backline looks a lot more stable this week, with Dale Copley’s return from a broken leg on the wing, forcing Josh Hoffman back to full-back and Corey Norman to five-eighth where he has spent most of the year. FORM:The Broncos had a lot to play for against Manly last Friday night, but they failed to deliver, only troubling the scorers with the final play of the game. They missed 46 tackles and made 13 handling errors on their way to the 16-6 defeat – their sixth consecutive loss. Fortunately, several teams just below them on the ladder have also faltered of late, allowing the Broncos a chance to confirm a top-eight spot with a win over Penrith on Friday night.
The Panthers made it rare back-to-back wins last Saturday afternoon when they extinguished the Titans finals hopes with a convincing 36-22 result that will see them avoid the wooden spoon. A positive end to what has been a forgettable season.

FORM:The Knights gave a fair enough account of themselves in Townsville last Saturday night, despite walking away with a 22-14 loss that put an end to their finals prospects. They did miss 47 tackles and handling errors were far more frequent than coach Wayne Bennett would have liked, but the Knights did fight back from 18-4 down to take the high-flying Cowboys down to the wire. Despite an improved second part of the season, the overall verdict has been one of disappointment for the Hunter club in 2012.

The Rabbitohs have no issues regarding a finals finish and win against the Knights on Friday night would confirm their first top-four finish since the ARL introduced the top-eight system back in 1995. The Bunnies picked themselves up off the deck after back-to-back losses to give the cellar-dwelling Eels a 38-6 hiding at ANZ Stadium. Full-back Greg Inglis was at his attacking best and the rest of the troops followed, particularly in the second stanza.

Dragons utility Nathan Fien will be sidelined indefinitely with a neck injury suffered last week against the Tigers. FORM:St George Illawarra were brave in their 22-12 loss to the Wests Tigers last Saturday, but their season is now all-but over. The Saints are still a mathematical chance to play finals footy, but the reality is they are done. The 2011 premiers are four points out of the eight in 12th spot and must win their last three games and have a host of results go their way to make the eight.

The Cowboys snapped their two-game losing streak with 52-12 thumping of the Warriors to boost their for-and-against and all-but secure a finals berth. They sit in fifth spot on 28 points, just one clear of Cronulla and two ahead of Brisbane and Wests Tigers, but their superior points differential means they’ll almost certainly play finals footy. A win this weekend will guarantee their spot in the eight and could lift them to fourth if Manly slip up against Newcastle.

The career of Titans co-captain Luke Bailey is up in the air after he ruptured his Achilles tendon in the match against the Storm last Friday. In some good news for the club, form full-back William Zillman returns from a sternum injury, however forwards Greg Bird (ribs) and Ashley Harrison (hips) are in doubt. The loss of Bailey pushes Nate Myles into the front-row, while Zillman’s return hands David Mead back his wing spot.
The Eels have lost Matt Ryan to injury, giving Taniela Lasaio a start on the bench. The club has an extensive injury list, with centre Willie Tonga (ankle) and Storm recruit Luke Kelly (cheekbone) the only players considered a chance of returning before the end of Parramatta’s season.

 

FORM:The Titans lost Bailey early against the Storm last Friday night, but that didn’t stop them from talking a richly-deserved 10-0 lead into half-time. Momentum was well and truly lost in the second-half though as the injury toll mounted and Melbourne’s big names began to dominate. It was a crucial loss for John Cartwright’s men, who now find themselves four points shy of eighth position. They simply cannot afford another loss and even then nothing is guaranteed.

The Eels are all over the shop at present, but the key difference between now and the first half of the season is that they are actually winning games. After racing to an 18-4 lead against the Chooks last Saturday night, the Eels went to sleep either side of half-time to surrender their advantage before storming home courtesy some fine work from Chris Sandow, Nathan Hindmarsh and Reni Maitua. It was yet another roller coaster ride for their hardy fans, but at least they are in a position to avoid the wooden spoon.

FORM: There was almost no form to speak of as the Warriors stood by and watched North Queensland shred their line to pieces and score almost a point per minute. Their last 240 minutes of football have produced just three tries, while they have conceded 20.

Statistically, the Panthers have had an even worse year than the woeful Warriors. However, one key trait they’ve shown all season is their willingness to stay in the grind and compete.

FORM:Another week, another win for the high-flying Bulldogs. Des Hasler’s troops have now won 11 games in a row following their come-from-behind 22-14 victory over Brisbane last Sunday. The Dogs, four points clear of second-placed Melbourne, can basically wrap up the minor premiership with another win on Friday night. Canterbury have won the last three between the two clubs.

The Tigers haven’t been quite as impressive but there’s small signs they could be about to hit their straps. Last weekend’s 22-12 disposal of St George Illawarra was their second on the trot but more importantly saw all their key players leading from the front. The Tigers are currently in eighth spot and with Newcastle and Canberra just two points behind they need to keep winning to secure a finals berth.

MISSING IN ACTION:Workaholic lock Corey Parker (shoulder) hasn’t been named, but is rated a slight chance of taking the field, while forward Josh McGuire suffered an eye injury last week and has been replaced in the 17 by Brendan Gibb. Josh Hoffman returns from suspension on the wing, replacing rookie Lachlan Maranta who returns to his duties with the Norths Devils in the Queensland Cup. The club is hoping winger Dale Copley (leg) will return next week, but utility Alex Glenn (hamstring) is not expected back until week two of the finals.
Experienced winger Anthony Quinn returns, forcing the Storm’s first Melbourne-born and raised player, Mahe Fonua, out of the side. Rory Kostjaysen and Dane Nielsen have been added to an extended bench and winger Matt Duffie (shoulder) will return via the NSW Cup as he eyes off a first-grade recall before the finals.

 FORM:A win against the in-form Bulldogs last week would have provided Brisbane with the ultimate boost to their flagging fortunes and at 14-0 up just before half-time; it appeared the upset was on. But a try to the Dogs just before the break gave them the momentum heading into the second 40 and the Broncos never really recovered, despite going painfully close to scoring on a couple of occasions. The Broncos have now lost four on the trot and have slipped into the danger zone in terms of missing the finals.

A half-time spray for the ages by Storm coach Craig Bellamy shook his team back into gear after they went to the break against the Titans trailing 10-0. Skipper Cam Smith rated Bellamy’s tirade in the ‘top five’ of all-time so it must have been animated given his reputation for blowing up a treat. It obviously had the desired effect though as Melbourne were a completely different side in the second 40 minutes, eventually overpowering a tired and injury-ravaged opposition. The Storm now sit in second spot on the ladder and a top-four spot is all but theirs.

MISSING IN ACTION:Knights coach Wayne Bennett has made only one change this week, with Kade Snowden returning from a knee injury at prop in a move that relegates Zane Tetevano to the interchange bench. The club is hoping former NSW winger James McManus will return from his factured cheekbone next week.
There are no changes for the Sharks this week following their massive win over the Warriors. Star duo Paul Gallen and Todd Carney made successful returns from injury in the match, leaving an absentee list that now consists of Wade Graham (sternum), Ben Pomeroy (groin), Nathan Gardner (knee), Bryce Gibbs (shoulder) and Josh Cordoba (knee). All these players are expected back within the next fortnight.

 

FORM:The Knights were well backed heading into their crucial home clash with the ladder-leading Bulldogs last Saturday evening, but they were never really in the hunt, blown out of the water in the opening 20 minutes. To Newcastle’s credit though, they defended strongly for the remainder of the game and the fact they weren’t embarrassed on the scoreboard in the final wash up gives them a chance to regain the momentum built up in the weeks prior to the match. They are now two points out of the top-eight with a host of other sides with just four rounds remaining.

The Sharks bounced back from three straight losses to all-but confirm a top-eight finish with a comprehensive 45-4 thrashing of the hapless Warriors in Auckland. The major difference was obviously the return of the club’s two best players from injury, with both Todd Carney and Paul Gallen contributing significantly to the stunning result. Carney, in particular, was at his best, posting two tries and landing eight goals and a field goal for a match haul of 25 points. With plenty of talent still to return from sidelines, the Sharks are looking strong heading into the finals.
